Swedish Universities & University Colleges — Short Version of Annual Report 2011

2011:15 R

Trends and Developments of Swedish Higher Education

Higher education in Sweden is provided at some fifty universities, university colleges and other institutions that vary greatly in size and degree of specialisation. The summary of the Swedish Universities & University Colleges - Short version of Annual Report 2011 gives an outline picture of higher education activities in Sweden.

In the academic year 2009/2010 the number of higher education entrants was higher than ever before, which was largely due to the increasing numbers of young entrants. In the autumn semester 2010 there were just over 369,000 first and second-cycle students in total at higher education institutions (HEI) in Sweden, also the largest number ever. During the last decade the number of incoming international students has also risen from just under 3 of the student population to just over 10 per cent. In 2010 the aggregate revenues for research and third-cycle programmes, both direct state funding and revenues from external funding, at the HEIs has risen just over 5 per cent in relation to 2009.
