Education and writing
The underlying idea in the series of publication on education has been to highlight contributions by various subjects to discussion of this topic or to provide a subject perspective in this discussion. In this publication, however, which is the ninth in this series, a thematic approach has been applied. Core aspects of education are normally defined in terms of broad perspectives or skills that are important in establishing an “education capital". The Danish philosopher, Fjord Jensen, has for example focused on historical, creative and communicative competence. Communicative competence, in particular, is a crucial factor for many people who are interested in education, and many of those who have been involved in this series of publications have focused on the importance of dialogue. Writing also plays a major role in the American "liberal education" tradition, for example because writing assists the development and refinement of argumentation skills. The results of the U.S. National Study of Student Engagement 2008 indicate specifically that courses with an extensive emphasis on writing lead to improved abilities on the part of students to use information from various sources, and also that students state that their studies have a stronger personal element and contribute to their social development.
