Supervisory visit to Umeå University 2007

Every year, the Legal Department of Högskoleverket (Swedish National Higher Education Agency) conducts a supervisory visit at several higher education institutions (HEIs). The purpose of these spot checks is to review if HEIs are applying the valid regulations. Another purpose is to help and support HEIs to strengthen and develop their own control mechanisms.

Prior to a visit, the Swedish National Higher Education Agency (Agency) sends a questionnaire to the HEI and the Students´ Union. The questionnaire deals with, among other things, student representation and consultation, course evaluations, course and programme syllabuses, processing times, the appeals procedure, approved leave from studies and records management.

At Umeå University, the Agency can verify that, for example, the university has an ambitious policy with regard to student influence. The policy has been designed in collaboration with the Students´ Union and deals with, among other things, the question of student representation. The Agency can also confirm that the students have the opportunity to be represented on the university´s different bodies. There seems to be a working dialogue between the university management and the Students´ Union.
