Examples of good practice in study and career counselling and student health care at universities and university colleges

This booklet of examples of good practice is the result of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education´s evaluation of higher education institutions´ practices in study and career counselling and student health care, which was conducted in the autumn of 2006. The most important conclusions from the evaluation´s main report are summarised in the next chapter. The purpose of the evaluation was to stimulate university colleges and universities in their continued work to support students. With this booklet, we would like to spread good ideas and inspire continued development in these important areas. The booklet also serves as a concrete description of how the evaluated activities operate, thus complementing the more overall perspective of the main report.

The evaluation was carried out by an assessment team put together with the aim of including different experiences of and perspectives on higher education.
The team was made up of four external experts and two investigators from the National Agency. The basis of the evaluation was a survey in which institutions answered questions about study and career counselling and student health care. The team also met representatives from 39 of the country´s higher education institutions, as well as student representatives.

When institutions were ready to submit their written responses to the survey, the National Agency invited them also to describe examples of good practice in the area, in day-to-day activities as well as in project form.  These were limited to five examples per institution.  A majority of the institutions chose to submit examples of good practice, of which the National Agency then made a selection. When several described projects resembled each other, one or two have been selected and reference made to the other institutions. For some of the examples we have also interviewed the contact person.

The examples are presented in three sections: student health care, study and career counselling, and student reception and other. Many of the examples actually fit under more than one section.

The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education has chosen to present the breadth of the work done by universities and university colleges. This means that some examples may appear small and simple, while others might require more planning and perhaps greater resources. Some examples are general and were described by many institutions while others are more unique. Some are easy to turn into practice and others serve a different purpose by being an inspiration for future development. This is also the idea behind this collection of examples of good practice — that it should inspire in small as well as large ways, for the short as well as the long term.
