Yesterday, today and tomorrow - the National Agency for Higher Education 1995-2005

Ten years ago the National Agency for Higher Education was established. It is an autonomous agency which interprets its tasks on the basis of the framework laid down by the Swedish Riksdag and the government in statutes and ordinances, instructions, directives and specific assignments. The National Agency is to identify, formulate and respond to central questions about the state of the higher education sector from a national and international perspective.

In this report, produced for its ten-year jubilee, the University Chancellor Sigbrit Franke and the Deputy Director-Generals describe the work of their own departments in the light of the past, the present and the future.

Where future perspectives are concerned Sigbrit Franke writes as follows: “New elements and new measures will be added while much of what we have developed up to now will endure. We are, for instance, already hard at work preparing for what is to follow the current six-year round of evaluations when it is completed. In my opinion there are grounds for shifting the emphasis to some extent from evaluating programmes and subjects to institutional audits that focus on quality and evidence of quality and with site visits at departmental level as well. The idea of awarding distinctions for particularly eminent educational settings after evaluation is another proposal that is now being considered."
