Availability of physicians, nurses, dentists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists

Availability estimations of persons with doctoral degrees in occupational therapy, medicine, physiotherapy, nursing and dentistry show that, up to the year 2020, the number of vocationally active occupational therapists, physiotherapists and nurses will increase between 20 and 40 per cent, this based on current dimensioning of the degree courses in these professions. However, as far as physicians and dentists are concerned, the coming decennium will see a large number of retirement departures and this will mean a reduction in the number of those occupationally active in these groups unless more course places available.

Also analysed in the report is the significance international movement has on the availability of doctoral graduates in Sweden. For the moment Sweden is coping with its need for more physicians on the Swedish labour market through the recruitment of qualified physicians from other countries. In due course the availability of physicians in Sweden will be self-sufficient and on a par with the other educational groups.

At the behest of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education the Prognosis Institute at the Central Bureau of Statistics has carried out an availability survey based on current dimensioning and graduation rate for the respective doctoral courses; included were acquisition frequency and mortality rate. Its presentation of the overall availability of doctoral graduates within the various disciplines also contains a two-part data age composition showing the overall availability for ages up to 65 years, and for ages up to 74 years.
